A significant step in transitioning for those who are transgender is changing their name and correcting their gender marker in the public record. The good news is that it is not so hard to accomplish this step, thanks to the Travis County courts and UT Austin. UT Austin has worked hand in hand with the Travis County courts to develop a simpler method for gender marker corrections and name changes.
We are now able to file the pleadings, submit the evidence, and get an order for the gender marker correction and name change by submission, which means that the judge reads the file, then issues the order. We no longer need to appear in court!
As a result, Vonda Covington will represent clients who need their gender marker corrected in the public record (and who wish to change their name) for a flat fee of $900, which includes the filing fee of ~$300.
